I began using digital audio workstations in 1994 with a 4-track Soundscape SSHDR1. Over the years I progressed through systems from DAR, Fairlight, Avid Pro Tools and Cakewalk Sonar, but found that I was always having to "work" the system which in itself was disturbing the creative process. There were 4 criteria I was particularly looking for:
  1. Full feature-set
  2. Speed
  3. Transparency
  4. Reliability
I had read some glowing reviews of PreSonus Studio One so in 2012 I downloaded the fully functional 30-day demo and gave it a run. I was immediately hooked on the incredibly easy workflow, the reliability (it just never crashed) and the fact that nearly everything was where you expected it to be. It did absolutely everything I wanted it to do, and enabled me to do things that I didn't know I wanted to do! Plus the Project Page enabled me to create DDPs without external software. A few months after first starting to use the system I had used Studio One to record, mix and master a CD from Albert Lee and record mix and master the DVD soundtrack to his 70th birthday concert at London's Cadogan Hall. Here we are 6 years later in 2018 and I cannot imagine ever moving away from Studio One. It's an incredible all-rounder. It enables me to work on ideas at lightening speed, it never lets me down, I can produce finished masters as DDPs and best of all I hardly even notice that I'm using it - that's the best compiment of all.
